Thursday 29th September 2011

Today I have learned...

...that there are a load of houses round the back of Eccleston I never knew existed. You see, this is what a road closure and diversion can do for you.

Wednesday 28th September 2011

Today I learned....

... that there are lots of really pretty places in Kent. Really pretty! And that September can have the most beautiful days of the year - even the wind was hot. And that spending your lunch hour outside is really rewarding and relaxing. Want to try to do this at least once every week, although the winter. I need to get this garden sorted out - it will take years but I must do it.

This winter's goal: get some of that 50p manure onto the beds and start digging.

Next year: get rids of those horrid shrubs and plant something nice. I like roses, why not have roses? I do like shrubs but not these ones, esp as st John's Wort, it turns out, is poisonous.

Tuesday 27th September 2011

Today I learned....

....that a thing made up from tinned lentils, some sausages and leeks, served with a packet of instant rice can be very nice.

Somehow despite going shopping and having a menu plan, I had no meals for this week. I think the things in the cupboard were subtly different from the things I thought I had, eg, did not include the ingredients I needed for the meals on the list. Never mind....

Monday 26th September 2011

Today I learned...

...that you think you've understood the arrangement but you haven't.

we both turned up to get the baby from nursery - me having raced back from Liverpool so that S would not have to do it. He turned up because he hadn't got a text from me saying I would. I thought I would only text him if I couldn't do it.

Bah.

Also we found that the road outside nursery is closed and being dug up to repair a collapsed sewer. Yikes!

Sunday 25th September 2011

Today I learned....

...that after a really exciting family day, it's not just the baby who needs a whole 24 hours to recover. Beach, garden, chatting, pub, present and toys....we were all shattered.

Not sure what we did.... did I pot up those bulbs with the baby? I think so. It got done, anyhow, and I amazed myself by getting gardening chores done - ripping out brambles and weeds, and cutting back a load of the horrid still-not-dead tree.

Saturday 24th September 2011

Today I learned....

...that a Hungry Horse pub can be a very pleasant family experience. Contrary to all expectations (I thought it would be really horrid, the chav of pubs.) But it was great.

Friday 22nd September 2011

Today I learned....

...that you can decide to go to the zoo at 1200 and not be there until 1500 because getting and eating lunch from ASDA can take so long.

Still worth it though.

Thursday 22nd September 2011

Today I learned...

...that sometimes even with money (vouchers) in your pocket, you can't find anyhtign to buy in Marks and Spencers.

That Trafford Centre store is rubbish. Terrible layout and unpleasant store design. Will go to Deepdale instead.

John Lewis never disappoints though, and I loved what's in Next at the moment.
Debenhams - as usual, I got to the entrance, looked at the jumble sale of perfume/bags/toiletries and then luggage/cafe/homeware on the other floor, and just decided not to bother. I have only been round that Debenhams once and that was with Mum. It's a truly dreadful layout. Did they just hire the worst designers for the Trafford? Did the real designers spend all their time on Bluewater and Cribbs causeway?

Enjoyed my initial John Lewis coffee very much and that was what I always look forward to the most. Thank you, John Lewis Espresso bar!

Wednesday 21st September

Today I learned....

..that I was not required in the meeting which had been my original reason for travelling up to Newcastle in the first place. Very annoying and another symptom of this work/team/management issue that I can't quite put my finger on. Something is not working, but what? And why do i feel guilty about the idea of mentioning it?

Is it me?

I know it's not me. But what can we do? We seem to have lost our voice. The person who might be our voice is busy with their own things, and does not seem interested.

How to fix it?

Tuesday 20th September

Today I learned....

...that it is very pleasant to sit eating a nice meal reading an absorbing book by Jeremy Clarkson. Again, not so much a revelation, more a confirmation. I chuckled all through my meal which must have been off putting for the Dutch/German business man sitting at the next table.

Monday 19th September 2011

Today I learned....

... that a dreaded things is rarely as bad as you thought it would be. The customers were very nice even when things weren't working. It hasn't fixed any of their big issues though. But hey, I was not asked to because no-one responded to my messages asking about the purpose of the visit. we did very well considering and once again I was able to pull some rabbits out of hats. Not everyone can do that you know. Imagine if I was 'just' a trainer.

Still worried about it, and slightly despairing of this customer achieving what they need.

Oh - and I also learned that if you miss a turn in Liverpool city centre, it's a very long way round in a city you assume you know quite well but in fact have never paid that much attention to in terms of one way systems and no entry signs. Started late on site. Sigh.

Sunday 18th September 2011

Today I learned....

....that you should not wait 2 weeks to create a blog post about a Sunday when you have no prompts to remind you what you did. We may have gone to the Delph, or to Heskin Hall, or just Tescos. I cannot remember.

Saturday 17th September 2011

Today I learned....

... that of course lots of bulbs are poisonous. Not the hard way, thank goodness, but it had not even occurred to em that going to the garden centre to choose spring bulbs would be anything other than relaxing and fun. Instead, the usual world of hazard and danger everywhere.

Never mind, job done.

Friday 16th September

Today I learned....

..that I am bad at sticking to a plan to take the baby to the park, because I know I don't have the willpower to stop her running to the swings and just have a lovely run round instead. Instead we did pot-washing in the garden. Not too bad in baby-enjoyment terms and actually useful. Hurrah!

Thursday 15th September

Today I learned...

...more about Direct Works than I ever knew before, but none of it made me feel more confident.

Wednesday 14th September

Today I learned.....

...that not being able to get hold of anyone to ask their advice is very stressful.

OK I didn't learn this for the first time today, but really. Our project and account manager away, also their, and no clue as to where, who or what for next week's consultancy - having asked them originally for plenty of detail. No-one to cancel it with. Gar!!

Tuesday 13th September 2011

Today I learned...

...that I should have done a proper run through of the new course before delivering it. I focused too much on making the supporting documentation make sense (which did need doing) but should have spent extra time on checking that the physical activities I asked learners to do flowed in a way that supported learning.

I also learned that there are still vast swathes of this course which have not been committed properly to memory.

More work to do!

Monday 12th September 2011

Today I am learning...

..that a hurricane very far away can give the UK really, really windy weather.

Hurricane Katia has moved across the Atlantic and is causing 70mph winds in the north and west of the UK. A good day for washing, though.

Sunday 11th September 2011

Today I learned....

..that i have a pretty good idea of what SHOULD happen in Song of Ice and Fire... but little expectation that it WILL.

Have just finished book 4, that is to say, volume 5. The latest one is not out in paperback until next year. Reviews say that it moves you no further than the situation at the end of book 3, that is to say, volume 4. So you're in effect reading 2 whole volumes worth of story with no actual story.

I could have put the plot development in this last 900 page volume into about 300 pages. Jaime is soured on Cersei and thinks more about Brienne, to the extent or keeping his vow to Catelyn Stark. Brienne has searched for Sansa and possibly been killed. Cersei becomes insane and is thrown down by the church. Master Aemon tells Sam he needs to find dragons, then dies. Sam arrives at Oldtown having got laid. Arya takes her first life as a novice of the many faced god.

I think that's it. Everyone else is in a holding pattern: Dany still waiting for dragons to grown, Myrcella still engaged to a Prince of Dorne despite plots imploding all around, Tommen still king, Jon Snow still Lord Commander of the Wall, Tyrion and Varys still missing, Sansa Stark still pretending to be Littlefinger's daughter, Bran and Meera still the other side of the wall with Coldhands. Umm.... Rickon still being looked after by Osha, Stannis still claiming the north and beset by the bizarre cult woman, the Ironborn still bent on conquest.

This really did not need 900 pages and I'm told that the next 900 pages does not progress things either - it tells the story of the characters there 'wasn't room for' in this last book, and brings them up to the same point Great.

On the positive side, assuming this series is ever completed, the TV and film adaptations will be a lot more succinct.

Saturday 10th September 2011

Today I learned...

.. that I feel like growing my hair long one last time.

(Ie, before I'm fifty and should length hair has to go by the wayside. I would like SweetPea to remember me with long hair when she was a child. Also so I look a bit more like the photos taken not 3 years ago when I seem distinctly younger than I do at the moment.)

PS the stories about Jennifer Aniston are all about how SHORT her hair now is. Well, for me this would be long.

Friday 9th September 2011

Today I learned...

...that scarecrows grow more popular year by year.

Charnock Richard Scarecrow festival. Reasonably busy Friday, absolutely packed Saturday and plenty of people and cars around on Sunday too. Go Charnock! Wish our village has something like this.

Thursday 8th September 2011

Today I learned (and it's only morning so there may be more)...

..what a Buddhist hearse looks like. After C described it I had to find out!

Wednesday 7th September

Today I learned....

.... That I sound quite knowledgeable across a range of Orchard modules - and have come a very long way from when I joined the firm 7 years ago. I impressed myself which I hope is not a bad thing, but also reassured myself because I CAN do this job, I AM good at it and people DO need to know what I can show them.

Also: what can you give and yet still keep? Knowledge.

Tuesday 6th September 2011

Today I learned....

...That doing admin in a funeral parlour - which I imagined to be all paperwork and customer service - involves lifting a hanky off the faces off deceased people for when their relatives come to view them in an open coffin.

That if you want to scatter ashes from a box, bring a scoop. Don't 'season' as if sprinkling salt and pepper.

That my friend is made of pretty stern stuff to spend all day in a building with dead people.

Monday 5th September 2011

Today I learned...

That I like blogging, especially with pictures. This was a re-learn as I used to like this when I had more time, but had thought I was far too busy for it now. Well, I guess I am, or should be, but I like doing it and looking back over the images I chose. So that's good.

I also learned that you don't need to put much on your plate.

I am gradually getting back to eating small amounts, just like I used to. And I'm noticing that not eating sweet things does help my teeth, though I'm not so sure about the brushing BEFORE meals thing as it just leaves my mouth feeling tingly before eating and not clean afterwards. Hmmn.

Sunday 4th September

Today I learned....

....that early September is as much my favourite time of year as late April.

I am a seasonal transitions kind of person!

Saturday 3rd September

Today I learned...

That some days are so busy and exciting you can forget Doctor Who was on. Lucky for Sky Plus!

Friday, 2nd September

Today I learned...

..that when it's a beautiful day outside and your mum has come 300 miles to see you, you completely waste it by going to Tesco. Sorry sorry sorry!

Thursday 1st September 2011

Today I learned....

....That I like being busy around the house on my own but wish I had more legitimate time to do it in.
